They are still in Texas, but they no longer in San Antonio, but in Houston

We have not heard from John in a few days, actually a week. Chuck called him last night to check to see if they are still doing what ever it is that they are doing.

Now, you have to keep in mind that I am getting my information second hand from Chuck and I could be missing out on some stuff, but I try to get in what I can and make it as interesting as I can.

Here is what I have so far,

1. They have not eating one MRE. Not a single one. They are eating really well and gainging weight. I think they have to start walking or something to get it off.

2. The rig is still not fixed, so they have put all of SToddard Country strike team in IC. How funny is that. They were told that if they get called again to do this in the future, that they will be put in IC. Chuck will now want to go with that. They send out the trucks and they know where they are going and when they return. The drivers may not know, but those sending them out will.

3. I don't know where they are sleeping, but it sounds like a good set up. At least they are not paying for the accomodations. They are getting plenty of rest and food.

I am sure that there is more, but I don't remember. I will have to get back and write some more later today.

However, it sounds like they are all doing will.

They are in Houston, San Antonion in no longer staging, it has been closed out. They are talking about sedning them home sometime this week, but we have all heard that before, and someone is going to have to get that rig fixed.

Sunday, September 21, 2008

As of Friday, Coop and John were still in IC. Coop was in charge of IC of staging in San Antonio and John has the responsibility of sending and receiving trucks in and out.
They have been taking a few people back closer to Galveston, but into their homes. They are transporting from shelter to shelter. 507 is still up and running. It made two runs transporting patients back. 506 is still down. The replacement part was to come off the assembly line on Friday and overnight it to San Antonio.
There are about 100 ambulance in San Antonino. A bunch were sent to Houston.
They are still eating well. They get a buffet meal everyday. I guess they learned from the first experience what needed to be done and did not want any more members of the Strike teams to come unglued on anybody else like some one else we know, but I am not going to mention.
I found out last night that one of the ambulances from St. Louis, MO had an accident last week. I don't know where they were at, but it T-boned a pick-up truck. I don't know if anyone was injured. They rig had to piece it together and drive it back to St. Louis. What luck. This is when Duct tape come in handy, along with bailing wire.
They did hear that they might be letting some start coming home on Tuesday of this next week. Whether or not that will happen, no one really knows.

This was just sent to me and I feel like I have to post it. I love shoes and this picture goes with what I have been blogging about.
It came with the title " hurricane shoes" I love it.

They put Who in Charge?

What is to be said if John Standridge and David Cooper are in charge? That's right! They have been put in the commanding tent. They tell who to go where. John just sent Stoddard County's 507 on a run. Chuck asked him where he sent them, "Hell, I don't know!" was John's reply. There are GPS on the rigs, a major life saver, more ways than one.
Their team leader is now the task force leader, being in charge of over 5 teams, which is 25 trucks. I only know what I was told about him and I understand, is well, he was a nut case.
507 is out of the shop with the air conditioning working. However, 506 had a "check engine" light on. Well, being as new as it is, it was taken to the shop to be checked out. There is a problem with the fuel injector. The rig is so new that there is no parts for it yet. It has to be special ordered. What luck. That is how John and Dave became in the command tent.
John said everyone was doing fine. He was about to go to bed after a 12 hour shift doing the command tent. They are eating really well. A whole lot better than when the first team was down there. They are not eating any of the MREs. They are getting, get this, pecan pie, shrimp, lasagna, steaks, bbq ribs. A whole lot better than the first team. I think Chuck is ready to go back with what they are eating now.
They don't know anything about Beaumont, Houston, or Galveston. They don't know where they trucks were sent to or for what. He thinks they are letting some back into Houston. They don't get any news down there like what we do here.
Nothing was said on when they get to come home, but I can imagine it will be like the last time, at the moments notice. I know that they are eager to get back home.

Still in San Antonio

Chuck talked to John this afternoon and they are still in San Antonio. There were to go for a mission last night, but then was canceled. The ambulance without the air is still in the shop and the other one was taken in for a computer update.
They are eating really well. They get a boxed lunch but for supper, they get really good food. Last night, they had ribs. I doubt they came from Hickory Log or Dexter BBQ. They have a tv room and quite a bit of comforts. This team has it a lot better than the first team. John said that the strike team leader is a little nuts. He must be pumped by too much caffeine, through too much coffee or Red Bull. John said that he was just a little on the scary side. (I guess too much energy).
The weather there was nice. It had cooled off somewhat, but still a little too warm. There has been a nice breeze all day.
Everyone else was doing fine.

What a Weekend with Ike

As many of the readers of this blog know, Ike came through here like a freight train. It was a little slower when it hit here than when it hit the gulf coast, but for winds around here to be from 40 to 60 plus mph, that is pretty strong. Many trees and buildings got some damage. Power outages where everywhere. I called my father-in-law last night and he still did not have power. I assume that much of the rural areas do not have power.
We have not heard from the strike team who are down in Texas yesterday. Chuck went to go check on John's house and everything was fine there. I did text John that, but he has not replied.
If anyone who is reading this has heard from them, please email me so I can post it on here and on my other blog. There are a few readers on that one as well.
With Ike gone through, with the help of a cool front, the weather is a lot cooler and comfortable. It now feels like fall.

We Got Slammed by Ike

Our power was off the biggest part of the morning. due to what is left of Ike. The winds here gusted up to 45 mph. We got some tree damage, again. Throughout the town, there were trees and limbs down. The fire department was out around 7:30 to start clearing the streets.
We had not heard from the guys down in Texas this morning. We have been kind of busy cleaning up around here. We will get in contact with them later today. I have been watching the radar and they are getting some rain in San Antonio.

More to come later.

Ike is moving on

John called a little ago. They are still in San Antonio. Setting and waiting. They go them up at 5 this morning, still up and waiting.
They are all in air conditioning, but in one rig. There was talk about trading rigs, someone from up here would drive one and exchange it mid ways. However, the storm is between San Anton and here, hitting Little Rock, Ar. There are tornado warings just south of here. Whoever drives, will have to drive in the storm. Dave decided against it for now, to dangerous with the storm.
I did talk to Dave about KFVS12. He is trying to get some good pictures to send,
It was still hot down there. The sun is shinning and the wind is blowing there while here it is cloudy and the wind is blowing.

These are just some of the pictures taken by Chuck while he was down there in Texas doing hurrican recovery from Gustav. More picts later to come.

Got News, an "Ike" Update

John just called and gave me an update. They are in San Antonio and have been there since yesterday. They have been told that they will stay there until tonight.
He was setting at a Chevy dealership getting the AC fixed in the rig. It went out on them yesterday on their way to San Antonio from Houston. It was 95 degrees in the rig. They had the windows down, the fans going and a patient in the back. (UGGGGG).
They finally got a shower after three days. He said everyone was starting to get ripe. The rig has been running straight for three days non stop. Last night was the first it had stopped in that time. They had gone from San Antonio to Houston to Beaumont to Auston to Beaumont to Houston back to San Antonio. There is a lot of road construction going on so they could not open the interstate going into Houston. He said the drivers on the roads where nuts. He told me that he lost some more hair due to the other drivers. They followed a local ambulance service through the back roads and got to their destination a lot faster. I told him it was best to hook up with those local boys. He agreed.
Houston is getting battered. He said that there are fires and they know that there will be many rescues and recovers that is going to have to be done. The residence of Galveston who stayed where told that they had better keep some type of identification on their body, preferably write their social number on their arm for iding the body.
There was a boat in the gulf stuck in the storm that the coast guard could not get to. The last time they made contact with them was at 10 last night. The people where scared to death, but still hanging on. The coast guard told them just as soon as they can get a cutter out there, they will be out to get them and send a tow boat.
The weather in San Anton was nice this morning. The temp is about 70 or so, sunny with a few clouds and nice breeze. John said just like being at home. He can see a few clouds, but it was comfortable. He knows that this afternoon, it will be unbearable hot, has it has been this week.
They finally got to lay down last night to sleep. They were so tired that they did not care were they sleep. John said that he would sleep on concrete if he had to. They are staying at Kelly AFB and will be there until tonight, where they suspect they well be helping in Houston and/or Galveston.

Is it really "NO News Is Good News?"

As of Thursday, the team was evacuating Beaumont and sending them to Austin, Tx. They were to return back to Beaumont afterwards and do more evacuating.
Galveston started getting his yesterday by the rain and winds of Ike. The Coast Guard was doing some rescues on the Island of Galveston. Houston was told that they would be safer if they stayed inside the city. However, Houston is getting hit hard with a lot of damage to large buildings. The 911 service in the city is not answering any calls, they are all gone. A fire broke out early this morning and the fire department could not respond because there are not phone and power in the city. Ike made land early this morning as a cat. 2. It has now been downgraded to a cat 1 with winds now around 50-60 mps. The spread of this storm is really large. We should be feeling the effects of this storm starting tonight, early tomorrow.
We have not heard from the Strike team since yesterday morning where they had returned to Beaumont to evacuate a hospital. We have not heard from them since.
I am going to text John Standridge this morning and hopefully he will get the text and respond.

The second strike team is on the move!!

Got a phone call from the second team today. They left Kelly AFB really late last night and arrived in Houston even later. They well be starting to evacuate Galveston today taking them to the air port and flying them out this time. The hurricane is expected to hit that area sometime Saturday.
At Houston, they did not have a place to stage so they had to sleep in the ambulance in a high school football stadium. That is three to four in an ambulance trying to sleep.
I hope to get more news later tonight.

A New Adventure Every Minute

The second strike arrived in San Antonio this morning which was adventful with the crew that is with them, with many stops having to be made before getting to their staging area, Kelly AFB.
There are hundreds upon hundreds tour busses and ambulances that are staged there. I would reallly like to know the real number, but probably wont get that until after it is all over with. However, I was told that it was as far as the eye could see.
The crew got some down time, I really don't know for how long. They got to take their showers that I understand that they could not wait to take, that from David Cooper. I won't even go there on that one.
They have already sent out about 500 busses and ambulance tonight to start evacuating hospitals and nursing homes. The person giving me this information did not know where they were going, but I sure hope the others do.

They said that the sleeping arrangements where a whole lot better this time than two weeks ago. This time they have cots assigned to their teams, every truck has a satillite phone and every team leader has a nextel phone. The ones who went last time who are on this trip said it was much better, except for the showers. This time, they don't want to lose anyone or send them where they are not suppose to go. They got teamed up with some of the same team members as the last time. This time, Dave is not team leader.

Ike is expected to hit the coast of Texas sometime Saturday with Galvaston being in the line of fire on this one. The state of Texas is expecting flash flooding in a large part of the state with San Antonio area in the flooding. When talking to Chuck about it, he said that San Antonio floods easily.

I did see on The Weather Channel the number of busses and ambulances that they had sent out to neighboring cities and counties. I don't remember the exact number, but there was a large number of busses sent to Houston to evacuate.

Will, that is all that I have for you know. Hopefully to get more updates tomorrow.

A new crew

Just got a call from John Standridge. They are now at Kelly AFB in San Antonio. They have been there for about 30 minutes. He said "They are packing them in like hot cakes." They were told they have eight to ten hours down time and he was going back to get some sleep. I told him that it was projected to hit the Corpus Christie, Galveston area. He commented that everyone was getting ready for it to hit there.

Another team

There has been another team formed to go back to the gulf coast. Chuck will not be going on this trip, however we will be getting phone calls from some who are going and I will post updates from them on this blog and on myspace blog.
The next team will be leaving soon and updates on their happening will be posted as I get the information.
Chuck is going to stay close, working the shifts for others as they are gone.

Well, Let's see what happens next

The crew came in last night around 20 minutes till eight. Chuck did not get home until around 9, Everyone was so happy to be home and see each other. There is another crew standing by to leave for the next storm that is expected to hit the same spot mid of the week. Chuck is going to stay home and cover the shifts of those who have to leave.
On their way home yesterday, they were told that they may have to turn around and go to Mississippi. They made it from Little Rock, Arkansas to Dexter in just around four hours. Everyone is tired and ready for a home meal and their own beds. There is one member who is going back with the next crew.
Everyone is happy that they are back.

Finally

They are on their way home today. They left Tyler, Texas this morning around 11. Going to post pictures when he gets in and I get them down loaded from the camera.

Now in Tyler, Texas, but who knows where else

They were in Tyler yesterday and taking patients back to Beaumont. They finally got some sleep at the Holiday Inn in Tyler. The real Holiday Inn, not a make shift place. This place had real beds. However, Chuck could not sleep in his bed. He is so use to his cot, that he fought the bed, but he did get some sleep.
When he called me this afternoon, he was washing an ambulance getting the bugs off of it. There are these bugs down there that they call "Love Bugs". He said that the rigs where covered with them. He took it to the car wash. They were told that they had to get them off because the acid in the bugs will take off the paint.
They are staying in Tyler tonight until 8 in the morning. There are not enough cots there for everyone. I guess some will be sleeping on the floor again. They do not know what they will be doing tomorrow or where. They suspect that they will be there to wait on hurricane "Ike". If that is the case, everyone they took back, will have to be moved again. Everyone is so tired and worn out. Many just want to stay there and get it done, some wants to come back to get some rest.

A changed Man

He called back and said that they had went to Wal-Mart where he bought himself a pair of clogs. Thats right, clogs. He has been wearing pj bottoms, t-shirt and boots all day, even to Wal-Mart. Now he is wearing clogs. He is becoming a changed man.
He heard a rumor that they may be heading to Jacksonville, FL. THis is a guy who does not like to leave Stoddard County let alone the state of Missouri.
They are now staying in a warehouse in Longview. He managed to get some of his clothes washed, but not all the way dry. He is haning is wet laundry on poles to dry. His modesty is out the door.

Finally seeing some rain

When I talked to Chuck last night, they were on their way from San Antonio to Beaumont taking a patient back home. He was in Houston while I was talking to him. He started seeing spots on the windshield. It was rain. The first rain they had seen while being there. They had heard that parts of Texas had some wind damage. They did not know where they would be going after they go there.

Today, I did not get to talk to him until after I got home from work. He was in Longview Texas. I asked where that was at, he said he did not know, but it was nice and green. He was getting some drizzeling rain there as well. He thinks they were at a staging for help, there where large trailers full of supplies sitting on the parking lot. Longview is on the northern, eastern side of Texas, almost to Arkansas.

They are at a center at Longview. He got word that they have to be out of there tonight, a meeting is going to be held there. The city is looking for some place for them. There are some empty buildings, but they are not completed, so they cannot stay there for the night, city codes stuff. One group that they were with has left for Louisana. They think they are being kept close for what is upcoming this weekend. They just don't have a place for them for the night.

Finally going on the road.

Well, they are finally moving. What Chuck just told me is that they are going to a town just north of San Antonio and going to move a few patients back to Beaumont, a five to six hour drive. Then he does not know what is next. They think that they may have to go to the east cost later in the week.
I think what he likes so much about doing this is when they go through towns transporting patients, they get a police escort. He thinks that is cool. I asked him if he has driven over 80 mph, he said yes, he is out of his comfort zone on that one. He said that David figured it up and they run a solid 20 hours straight hot. He is so tired of hearing sirens now.

Who knows what is going on with Gustav?

Talked to Chuck twice today. They were at an elementary school in San Antonio. Chuck spent all those years getting out of school, not to get back into one.
They were allowed to sleep in this morning until 7. He got up at three, and showered. His legs were hurting. When I called him at 9, they were getting ready to leave the school for the base. Did not know what or where they were to do or go.
When I talked to him again at 2, he was sitting in the rig, not very happy. Been sitting there for a while. He said then that they maybe going back to Beaumont and start bringing patients back in. He said that they are in teams of 25 and Cooper has been made team leader (Is that a big surprise?). They really did not know what they were do still at this time.
Maybe another update before the day is over with.

Once again, they are on the road

I have spoken to Chuck four times today and plans keep changing. Last night, they thought they would have to evacuate a hospital, but by 11 pm, they did not go anywhere. When they got back inside of the center, they had lost their cots to some other people. They slept on the floor. At 2 am, there was an announcement for some volunteers, when they got up, Chuck and other took their cots. The volunteers did not go anywhere, they had to sleep on the floor.
At 12, he was sitting in the truck waiting to go somewhere, they did not know. All the cots had been taken up and the center evacuated. When I talked to him again at 3:20, they where on their way to San Antonio again. They were the last of 50 out of 300 to leave Beaumont. I think he is ready to come home.

The weather is hot and sunny on their way to San Antonio.

STill In Beaumont

Chuck just called and they are still in Beaumont. They will not be leaving. He is so mad. They were sitting in their trucks until 11 pm and then were told that they were not going. They got back in the center and their cots where gone. They had to sleep on the floor. At 2 am, 12 ALS ambulance where asked to volunteer. When they got up, those on the floor took their cots. The thing is, they got to the trucks and they did not go. They where told to stay, so they had to sleep on the floor.
Chuck said that they have not seen the other members of their team since they left San Antonio. They are with other teams. The communication there is poor.
They finally got a television there.
The weather there is nice and cool. He sees a band coming in.

Gustav has not got us yet

Chuck just called and they are leaving Beaumont to evacuate a hospital, moving them to Houston or to San Antonio. They well be staying at San Antonio for the duration, they think, but they will not be in Beaumont when it hits. They will be out of harms way. He is feeling better since he got some rest and some food.

Another update

It is 7:30 and I called Chuck to find out how he was and what was going on. He was packing and loading up the truck with thier stuff, they were told that they had to leave, they were to move some more people tonight. They thought they had more down time, but it was coming sooner than expected. I told him that New Orleans was getting a squaw line with tornadoes. He said that he could see some out rings coming in and it was getting cloudy.
The center was running out of food and water for them.
He said to pray for them to be safe, get some sleep and food. He is starting to get a little scared.

Watching Gustav, the hurricane

For the past week, the nation has been watching what would happen with a tropical storm named Gustav. It was a tropical storm until Friday the 29th when it was up graded to a hurricane.

Our 20th anniversary was the 27th, we did get to have that together.
Chuck is on the Stoddard County Emergency response strike team and they were activated to go to the gulf coast Thursday. He was working at the Bernie ambulance station Thursday when they were put on stand-by. They knew they would have to go, but they hoped it not be until Friday or Saturday. He got the call at 10 that they were activated. He got home at 11 and we threw his stuff in the car. He told the kids good by and I took him to Dexter where two ambulances where waiting. There he found out that they were headed for San Antonio, tx. There were four others who where leaving as well. He left a little after 12.
He called me Friday morning, they were in Texarkana. He said that they saw many ambulances heading in the other direction, don't know what is going on. They have not seen many ambulances on the way down there. Everyone was tired, running on little sleep. The further down they got, the more ambulances they saw leaving the area.
They got to San Antionio around 5 Friday afternoon. They took the trucks to the air force base and where bussed to a local middle school to spend the night. Friday, they left early to get their orders.
Saturday, they were told to go to Beaumont, TX to the hospitals there. They had to evacuate patients there and take them to Texarkana, a four hour drive from Port Aurthor, Tx. They made that trip twice last night. He called me this morning and they were on their way back from Texarkana to Beaumont.
When he called me at noon, they were staying at the Ford Park Center in Beaumont where they are to wait out the storm. They are getting some rest and food. He said that he had the best canned Coke there. They got a place there that was dark and quiet.
Everywhere they went, people were very appreciative and thankful. He took a few pictures, but David Cooper is taking the most and will share.
I keep watching the weather and they say it will hit land tomorrow west of New Orleans. Where he is at, will get some of it. As of now, it is a catagory 3, the same as what Katrinna and Rita was when they hit land in 05. Hopefully it will weakend at night when the waters are cooler.

The Min-Summer Holiday Weekend

This has been a strange week. I really have not felt good this week, and with the 4th of July weekend, I feel worse.
The kids are having a good time home. I enjoy spending time with them. Chase is driving now, and I feel out of control, will I am with him driving.
Madison is still her strong willed self, there is no secrets with her, she will tell them all

The first Monday out of school

Like most Monday's, it is raining. We just got out of school for the summer this past Friday. It was hot and humid then. Saturday, I turned 40 and put out a garden and worked in that garden again on Sunday. It started raining last night and again this morning.
My neighbor asked me if I ran around the block on Saturday, I hadn't, I have been facing knee problems that makes it difficult to bend my knee.
I don't feel like I am 40, but my goals have been made to change. I did get my education done, but I still do not have a teaching job. I am still working on that.
I know that I just have to wait on God, his timing is better and that he has other plans for me, that I do not even know about.
Well, the rain is falling harder. It looks like grilling outside will not happen today, but that is ok, we don't do much on Memorial Day. At least the yard sales are over with.

My First Post

Well, I like writing my thoughts and ideas. Sometimes I have to be careful though as to not say to much are the wrong thing.
I hope to post pictures later and do more. I do have a lot to say and do.
